Two dicentras
putative Dicentra 'King of Hearts' Previously
on Alpine-L there has been discussion about Dicentra 'King of Hearts'. This year it
seems to be around in many of the local area nurseries for approximately $12 US per plant
(as shown above). The photo is flattering and makes it look better than it really
is. The foliage is good, but the flowers look rather ordinary as dicentras go.
For those who know the true 'King of Hearts' cultivar, does this plant look like the real
thing? |

Dicentra cucullaria I've
never given this eastern N. American species a second thought, believing it to be rather
ordinary. Viewing dozens of fine clumps in perfect bloom in Marsha Russell's garden,
I realize that I've been remiss in neglecting this pretty species. The common name
of Dutchman's Breech's alludes to the shape of the flowers.
