Tulipa batalinii

This photo was taken in the waning light of late afternoon
in Marsha Russell's garden.  Only about 3-4" tall in bloom,
when the flowers are closed up in low light they give the
appearance of tiny cottage tulips but with serpentine
foliage. Notice the dark royal blue flowers of
Viola pedata in the upper left corner.
