This rhizomatous Allium hybrid selection,
named 'Sugar Melt',
is a selected seedling of the very dwarf, late flowering hybrid
'Pink Pepper' (the latter looks like a green-leaved counterpart
to Allium senescens var. glaucum). Allium 'Sugar Melt' is
an excellent low growing selection which is very uniform in
appearance, with handsome basal tufts of mildly twisting
green strap-shaped leaves, and a profusion of light pink
flowers on 14" stems in late August and into September.
Flowers are held in upright, low-domed clusters, exuding
a noticeably sweet yet mild oniony scent that attracts
hordes of bees and butterflies. This is a first class
hybrid that will be introduced to cultivation shortly.
